Gill Pedersen

Gill Pedersen spent years as a creative crafter before she became a painter, which is a distinction she takes seriously. She has always worked in creative industries, as a stylist many years ago and later in an advertising agency. Nine years of formal classes have moved her from dabbler to something more considered, and she now describes herself simply as a painter, which is its own kind of statement.
She is drawn to beautiful colours and joyous subjects, and cites Anna Ancher, the Danish painter whose work is suffused with domestic light, as a key inspiration. What she has taken from Ancher, and from nine years of looking and making, is an understanding of how unexpected colour can transform a portrait or a shadow into something that feels more true than a faithful reproduction ever could. Small detailed work remains a challenge, though she has made her peace with that.
