Kate Adams

Kate Adams studied fine art in the 1970s and obtained a BA, which gives her a longer relationship with painting than most. She has been attending life drawing since 2016, quietly building on a foundation that was laid decades ago.
She works in landscape, but not in the way that word might suggest. Her paintings are about colour and the feeling of a place rather than its topography, which puts her closer to the emotional tradition of painting than the documentary one. Sheila Fell, the northern landscape painter, is a key reference point, alongside Van Gogh, Soutine and the American abstract expressionists. That is a coherent lineage: artists for whom a landscape is a way of expressing something internal rather than recording something external.
She values the camaraderie of the life drawing class and speaks warmly about the quality of the people around her.
