Sam Hazon

Sam Hazon had been painting in another class but wanted to branch out into different mediums, and didn't quite have the confidence to do it alone. A new class sounded like exactly the right place to try, and four years on, that instinct has paid off.
She still won't quite use the word "artist", but where there was once just "someone who could paint and draw a little", there's now the confidence to show friends her work and to say, simply, that she draws and paints. The subjects she loves are landscapes, sea views and buildings, mostly in oils, a medium she discovered in class and has embraced wholeheartedly ever since. Portraits are the harder challenge, and the thing she'd most like to do better.
She takes inspiration from the Impressionists, from the way they use light and brushwork to catch a single passing moment. That challenge came good in one particular piece: a portrait of her daughter that, early on, seemed destined to go wrong. Taken through the process step by step, it turned into something that genuinely looked like her, which is the kind of small triumph that keeps you coming back.
