Mia Nyberg

When Mia Nyberg finished her art A-level, a significant piece of advice from her teacher was to seek out the company of fellow artists. Taking this seriously, she soon found The Art Class and has never looked back. Five years on, she has moved a long way from the careful realism of her early work, developing a confidence with colour and oil paint that has given her artwork a voice of its own.
She has always loved pencil and charcoal, but oils have become her medium of choice, particularly for portraiture. She is working toward being more free and experimental, which is interesting given that one of her significant breakthroughs was starting a painting without a sketch, directly onto the canvas.
Scary at first, she says. It changed the way she paints. The bigger leap, though, has been with colour. In one recent portrait she abandoned naturalistic tones altogether and built the whole image from two vibrant colours, a single red and a single electric blue, letting them carry all the mood and drama. It is bold, passionate, and unmistakably hers.
In her personal practice, she aims to keep an open mind as to finding inspiration anywhere, such as in music, light, and the human form.
She is twenty-three years old and, though she has always loved art, she has been painting since 2020.
