Robert Gill

Robin Gill spent his career as an architect, a profession he describes as the mother of all arts. He also worked as a technical illustrator, so an appreciation of craft and structure has always been part of how he sees the world. He came to painting after retiring, looking for something to absorb him, and found it.
He works across oils, acrylics, airbrush and watercolour, though it's the airbrush work using acrylic inks that he keeps coming back to. His paintings of shorelines and water, particularly the way reflected light behaves on a surface, have become a quiet signature. Jack Vettriano, Roger Dean and Turner are among the artists he admires. The architects Jan Kaplicky, James Stirling and Frank Gehry sit alongside them, which tells you something about how Robin thinks about image-making.
